Perfect weather conditions and a strong, small field of elite runners combined to see the Fastest Known Time (FKT) and fundraising record smashed for the Rhino Peak Challenge last weekend.
The event is a fundraiser involving elite athletes, people of influence and so-called ‘everyday heroes’, each striving to raise money through personal pledges and offering an assortment of prizes to those that contribute.
SATIB Insurance’s Andre du Toit ran as an ‘everyday hero,’ raising over R40 000 for the rangers of Wildlife ACT, Endangered Wildlife Trust and Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife. He finished the challenge strong in a time of 3h56m.
“The event was a huge success and showed
the true value and strength of collaboration. Like minded, passionate and
driven individuals who get behind a single cause and in 30days essentially
raised R834,000.00 for conservation,” said Andre.
“There were no ego’s, no political posturing and no expectations of return
on investment. A refreshing and united effort bringing together corporates,
elite athletes, people of influence (that included CEO’s and community guides)
and some very “ordinary” every day heroes who just love trail running, have a
sense of purpose and value wilderness areas.
“The sweat, thirst, cramps, cuts and bruises experienced on the day were
diluted by a few ice cold beers, lots of storytelling and laughter…and of
course the immense satisfaction of having made a significant contribution to
conservation!
“SATIB and Ranger Protect will continue to support and drive initiatives
that ensure the preservation of our wilderness areas and look forward to the
next adventure.”
